Note from the CEO:
Summertime at Coro

I can just hear Janis Joplin singing, “summertime and the living is easy.” At Coro Leadership Center – St. Louis, we only wish that were true!

Our Fellows Program in Public Affairs and Women In Leadership (WIL) Spring Program both finished in May and our participants have graduated to be alumni. It's time to take a breath (if only briefly) and then begin the process of evaluating the past year and preparing for the coming classes. This preparation includes recruitment and selection for WIL, coordination with incoming Fellows Program participants, as well as the detailed design and refinements of the actual program training and train-the-trainer components.

June was the end of our fiscal year, and we have taken stock of how the organization has performed in terms of its goals, objectives, and commitments. We put a number of systems and supporting programs in place last year and look forward to realizing their benefits even more in the coming year. Like many nonprofits (and for-profits, for that matter), the economy challenged us. We thank all of our past financial, in-kind and volunteer supporters, and look forward to working with you in the coming year. Our plans for this next year reflect reality while still moving us steadily toward expanding the center.

This June, we said goodbye to two board members who had served Coro these past six years – Becky Coffman and Bob Samuelson. We thank them for their commitment and support in helping us to achieve our mission of preparing individuals to be engaged, responsible citizens and effective civic leaders.

Andrew McIntire, our Development and Alumni Relations Manager for the past 16 months, has left St. Louis to pursue a Masters in Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon. Andrew worked countless hours in all aspects of fundraising, communications, special events, and alumni relations. His personality, skills, and hard work were instrumental in Coro's ability to sustain and grow relationships and funding. Fortunately for Coro, and thanks to the power of the internet, he will continue to serve as our Communications Associate keeping up our website, e-communications, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media outlets.

In June, we had the good fortune of welcoming Abigail Heinz, who had been in training as a Fellows Trainer in St. Louis this past year, into her new role as Community Relations Manager. Her responsibilities will include community relations and outreach, sustaining existing and developing new organizational and individual support, securing Fellows placements, engaging alumni, and other aspects of development. She will continue to dedicate a portion of her time to training and programs.

As you can see, Coro doesn't slow down very much in the summer. Check out the opportunities that Coro, or its partners, is providing. Stay on the lookout for our upcoming blog and alumni discussion systems – just one more way to stay informed and connected with Coro.

- Dawn Stringfield, President & CEO

Alums in the News and on the Move

Andrew Butcher, a St. Louis Coro Fellows Program graduate from 2005 and Chris Koch of GTECH Strategies and Felix Brandon Lloyd of Skill-Life received a White House invitation on June 30th to join a select crowd of 100 to celebrate the creation of the Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation.

“Now more than ever, we need to build cross-sector partnerships to transform our schools, improve the health of Americans and employ more people in clean energy and other emerging industries,” Obama told the group gathered in the East Room. The $50 million Social Innovation Fund will support community partnerships and projects.

GTECH and Life-Skills were awarded the Echoing Green Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurship in 2008. Butcher and Koch, 2007 Carnegie Mellon grads, founded GTECH in 2007, a firm that reclaims vacant land through the growth of alternative energy crops to transition blighted space and serve as a platform for green jobs.

Bridget Flood: Congratulations to Bridget, Executive Director of the Incarnate Word Foundation, who has been asked to serve on a White House task force by the newly formed White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. The White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships was created with the aim of helping secular and faith-based nonprofits and community organizations. She will join 11 other people, mostly constitutional lawyers, on the “Reform of the Office” task force.

Bridget was a graduate of Women In Leadership, Class 19 and, as executive director of the Incarnate Word Foundation, has hosted a number of Fellows. The Incarnate Word Foundation, based in St. Louis, provides grants, education and advocacy in service to poor women, children and seniors. Since its inception in 1997, the foundation has provided more than $15 million toward these services.

Mary Ann Nestle, CSJ: Congratulations to Sr. Mary Ann, who just celebrated 50 years as a nun! She served as Director of Development for the Sisters of St. Joseph for 25 years and is now the Executive Director of the Carondelet Community Betterment Federation. She was a graduate of Women In Leadership, Class 16 and has been very active as an alumnae.

Fellow WIL Alum Nina Bryans said of Sr. Mary Ann, “The one thing that stays in my memory was that she was always cheerful, and carried a big smile on her face. I always felt happy when I was around her and wanted to work on projects with her; Celebrating 50 golden years as a vocation (whether in business or otherwise) is a great feat.”

We couldn’t agree more. Congratulations, Sr. Mary Ann!
